Melanie C Bivens

Founder

Melanie Bivens, a Fort Worth native, is the youngest child of the late Reverend Roy W. Bivens Sr. and his widow Mrs. Betty Joyce Green Bivens. Melanie is what you call a “Miracle Baby”. During her mom’s pregnancy, due to medications received because of a serious bout with asthma, Melanie was expected to be a child with special needs. Melanie’s only handicap is that she’s hearing impaired which has not stopped her from praising God and being a great musician, educator, & performer.

Melanie received her Bachelor in Music Education (BME), from Texas Wesleyan University and her Master of Sacred Music (MSM), from the University of St. Thomas. Melanie is known for her dynamic Music Workshops as she inspires musicians, singers, and church leaders here locally and around the globe (Johannesburg & Cape Town, South Africa, Namibia, Colombia & Canada) to pursuer their passion for Ministry in Music

Melanie has performed in various shows on stage at Jubilee Theatre, Fort Worth Opera Company, Bass Performance Hall, Soul Rep Theatre. Musical Director for “Auntie Explains Xmas”, “God’s Trombone” (which received Best Musical Award), “Crowns”, African American Repertory Theatre, (founded by actress Irma P. Hall), “Mahalia”, “Da Kink In My Hair” (2018-2019 Season Opener), “School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls”, “I Too, Am America”, & “Respect, A Musical Journey of Women”, “The Lawsons”, The Ensemble Theatre, “Next To Normal”, Bayou Theatre Company in which she won “Best Musical Director” (Broadway World), “Panto Little Mermaid”, & “You Are Cordially Invited To Sit In”, STAGES Theatre, “Fela!”, “The Color Purple”, “Fame”, & Once On This Island, HSPVA, Vocal Director for Dancing In The Streets “Motown Revue” @ Miller Outdoor Theatre, Voice Instructor & Musical Director & Conductor “Once On This Island” TUTS (Humphreys School of Musical Theatre), and was the featured pianist for TUTS promo commercial for their Broadway production of “Into The Woods” & “The George Floyd Commemorative Concert”, Artists Liaison/Program Coordinator.

Melanie is a member of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK International), The National Society of Leadership & Success, “PROUD” member of The Fountain of Praise, Dr. Remus E. & Dr. Mia K. Wright, Pastors, active in the Worship Arts Ministry, and Director for The Women’s Chorus at The Fort Bend Church, Pastor Byron C. Stevenson.

 

  • Kedrick Brown - Celebrity Masterclass Clinician

    Actor Kedrick Brown is a native of Littlerock, AR and is full breed performance machine. He has landed principal roles in the Oscar Award Winning Cuba Gooding Jr. ‘s Directorial Debut, BAYOU CAVIAR; set to hit limited theaters in October, Season Two of the hit CW superhero show, BLACK LIGHTNING, and the much anticipated horror film sequel, TALES FROM THE HOOD 2, Executive produced by Academy Award winner, Spike Lee, and distributed by Universal Studios set to release October 2, 2018.

    With all projects set to release in October, Brown has yet to feel he has done enough. He has signed on to enter the Houston Independent School District as the new Theatre Arts Director for the newly built Audrey H. Lawson Performing Arts Magnet Middle School. Most recently, you will have seen Kedrick appear in the hit Lifetime tv movie, SURVIVING COMPTON as legendary west coast hip-hop icon Alonzo Williams.

    Kedrick’s tv credits include Oprah’s new critically acclaimed drama series, GREANLEAF, John Legend’s executive produced series on WGN, UNDERGROUND, he had a recurring role on John Ridley’s critically-acclaimed ABC crime drama AMERICAN CRIME, appeared in the season two finale of SURVIVORS REMORSE currently airing on Starz and also can be seen in the 2016 holiday feature film THE NIGHT BEFORE starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie and Tracy Morgan Brown, who resides in Houston, earned his Bachelor of Arts in theater from the University of North Texas and trained in the University of Houston’s M.F.A. program with a focus in actin

  • Deirdre Graham - Teaching Artist

    Diedre Graham is a native of Mobile, Alabama. At an early age, Diedre cultivated her love for ballet, jazz, tap and musical theatre. While in high school, she created Imagine Me: Image in Me, an organization designed to raise awareness about body image and self-esteem through dance for girls between the ages of 12-18. In college, Diedre distinguished herself academically and artistically as an ABT (American Ballet Theatre) Scholarship recipient and the recipient of several dance honors from the University of Alabama Department of Theater and Dance.

    After graduating from college, Diedre became a member of Sanspointe Dance Company, where she performed and taught on the Dance-a-Bama Tour. Also, she performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Edinburgh, Scotland) and Jazz at Lincoln Center (New York, NY). Diedre has performed on tour, in music videos, and at music festivals (Something in the Water, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits) with artists including Pharrell Williams, Johnny Swim, 2 Chainz, Chamillionaire, and Coast Contra . Diedre loves to raise awareness for social issues through dance and was able to do so with Broadway Bares Equity Fights AIDS and STEPS on Broadway: STEPS Beyond Foundation. Diedre’s television credits include dancing in Roots (History Channel/A&E) and Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC).

  • Monica Harris - Teaching Artist

    Monica Harris has been involved in singing and acting as both an instructor and performer. She is a recently retired music educator from The Houston Independent School District where she taught general music and choir for 32 years. Her choirs won various awards in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and New Orleans. Several of her past choirs also performed in Disney World and Universal Studios. As a private vocal instructor Monica has prepared budding singers for pageants, magnet school auditions, professional auditions, and professional performances with much success. Monica currently sings with “The Phillip Hall Singers” and is part of the praise team at her church. She has opened for national recording artists, Kelly Clarkson, Peobo Bryson, and Kirk Whalum. Her acting credits include “Ain’t Misbehaving”, “Cinderella”, and “The Wiz”. Monica Harris also enjoys traveling and watching various sporting events from football to figure skating. She is the proud mother of one but feels blessed to have been a positive influence in thousands of children’s lives. Monica is super excited to kick-off her second act as a teaching artist with “Melodies by Melanie”.

  • Roshunda Jones-Koumba - Celebrity Masterclass Clinician

    Roshunda Jones-Koumba, Tony Award winner in Education, graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a B.A. in theatre and a Master of Education in administration.

    She is the proud recipient of the

    Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Teacher of the Year Award and the International Thespian Society Inspirational Theatre Educator of the Year Award. Jones was also inducted into the Texas Thespians Hall of Fame and received the inaugural Arts Educator of the Year from the TUTS Leading Ladies organization.

    As the director of the Panther Players Troupe #6753, the troupe has been successful on the state and national level at the UIL One Act Play contest, Tommy Tune Awards, Texas Thespians State Festival and International Thespian Festival.

    Jones -Koumba currently serves on the chapter board for Texas Thespians, UIL OAP Advisory Committee Chair Elect, board of directors for Texas Educational Theatre Association and president for the C. Lee Turner's Black Theatre Educators' Caucus.

    In addition, she was the director of the Litefooter youth program at the Plaza Theatre for eleven years where she was part of the board of directors for four. She was honored with a proclamation from the City of Wharton for the work she did in the community. During her limited free time, she's a teaching artist for TUTS Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, Ensemble Theatre and works as an actor, director and theatre consultant.

  • Trey Morgan- Lewis - Teaching Artist

    Trey Morgan is a proud Houstonian who has worked in the Houston Theatre Community for nearly ten years. During his time working in the community, he has served in many different capacities; from executive director to usher, but his true passion is performing on the stage. Some of his noted performance credits are Sister Act and The Wiz (TUTS), Godspell (MVE), Passing Strange (BTC), and The Color Purple (Carver Theatre). Thank you for supporting The Arts!

  • Dana Welch - Teaching Artist

    Dana has been dancing since the age of 6. During her younger years of dance she also studied gymnastics and cheer. She competed and took classes throughout the US and also traveled to Europe to dance at the North Sea Jazz Festival at the age of 14. In high school her focused switched to Theater where she performed in, choreographed and directed various shows. After high school, she went to San Jacinto College to study theater and then took over as owner/operator of her childhood studio at the age of 19. Dana ran Dance Center of Deer Park for 18 years, teaching all styles of dance and having a successful competitive dance team. Since closing her studio, Dana continued to teach dance and musical theater throughout the Houston Area. She works for Theater Under the Stars, Wildfish Theater and Spark Foundation and Enrichment Services as well as others. She has worked very closely with numerous programs for students and adults with “Special abilities” such as The Center for Hearing and Speech, Friends of Down Syndrome and The River Performing and Visual Arts. She also does various independent projects and Judges drill team competitions Nationwide. Dana is happily married with two adult children and two adult “Bonus” children as well as her french mastiff Buford. Dana has has a great time working with the students at the JCC and hopes to continue in future endeavors.
